Grandma Wills’ Pickled Wiener Recipe

Note on back of card: “Given to mom by a cowboy stunt man in Seligman. Do not give out!!”

Years ago, when my mom died of cancer, one of her few final requests was that Grandma make up a jar of Pickled Wieners. Yes, they’re really that good.

I went through the family cookbook and found the recipe card, and decided that this was too good to just sit on forever, so I typed it up.

A secret family recipe revealed, and the dying wish of a particularly eccentric woman.

The cowboy stunt man part makes this even more awesome than I remembered.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 qts distilled white vinegar
  • 1/2 box pickling spices
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 10 cloves of garlic
  • 1 12oz jar of hot peppers
  • 4 lbs of skinless wieners (beef)

Preparation

  1. Boil Wieners in one pan to heat
  2. Boil other ingredients
  3. Heat 1 gal glass jar (A big pickle jar, of course!) with warm water. Pour out. (It would probably be best to properly sterilize the container with VERY hot water instead -ed)
  4. Wipe grease from Wieners
  5. Cut slits 2” into wieners
  6. layer wieners into jar with spices and vinegar. Fill in this way to top.
  7. Let it sit 5 days, or to taste. (Your patience will be rewarded)
  8. Brine may be re-used by adding new peppers.

I bet this would go really good with a very robust beer or barley wine.
